A Photo of Barbarity: The Torment of Ilan Halimi

The publication of a horrifying photo of Ilan Halimi has caused a scandal in France – but for all the wrong reasons. Halimi was the 23-year-old French Jew who was kidnapped, abused, and killed by a self-styled “Gang of Barbarians” in early 2006. Apart from the brutality that it documents, the photo is also significant for another reason. It provides evidence about the motives of the crime. Ilan’s tormentors appear to have been inspired by perhaps the most notorious anti-Semitic crime of the last decade: the kidnapping and killing of Daniel Pearl.
